Doors are at 6:50 and we’re starting the film at 7:10!
No apes are on screen in this one, but Ichikawa’s Samuel Beckettian meditation on war and the human condition is haunted by the specter of “monkey meat” enough to warrant inclusion. The landscape and tone drew to my mind comparisons to Pasolini’s Porcile and his vision of a Voracious Cinema. Fires on the Plain is working double duty as our 3rd installment in the Cinema of 1959 series, too.
