Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

Sam Firstenberg · 1984

This week the From Below Microcinema presents part 4 of Sequel August: *Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo *(1984) on Thursday, August 22nd, at 8pm.

Here is the link to reserve a seat. Doors will be at 7:50 and we’re starting the movie at 8:10!

Rival groups of break dancers band together to resist the machinations of a greedy real estate developer who intends to bulldoze the community’s recreation center to make way for a new mega mall.

The investigation into *Breakin’ 2, *yet another sequel we haven’t actually see before, began first as a socio-linguistic concern. What is the source material actually like for the now-overused, sardonic naming structure for a follow-up: “____ 2: Electric Boogaloo,” a linguistic scheme now deployed widely across contexts, ranging from movie critics to right-wing insurrectionary nihilists? Is there something about the qualities of this particular sequel that tells something about what it essentially might mean to be a sequel?

*Breakin’ 2 *is a bright and silly dance film, a profitable box office hit bursting at the seams with 80s fashion and an unrelenting series of dance numbers on top of bulldozers, in ballrooms, in the streets, and under freeways. There very well might not be a frame in this film in which someone is not dancing. Also features an appearance by a 27-year-old Ice-T as himself.
