Demons

Lamberto Bava · 1985

The From Below Microcinema will be showing *Demons (1985) *(in a departure from our normal schedule) on *Tuesday, April 30th, at 8pm. *

Here is the link to reserve a seat. Doors will be at 7:50 and we’re starting the movie at 8:10!

A film premiere at the sinister Metropol cinema erupts in ghoulish mayhem as the movie-goers metamorphose into a goopy horde of flesh-eating demons.

This movie is a gross and delightful mess. Lamberto Bava, son and disciple of Italian horror master Mario Bava, burps up this loud, post-giallo pastiche. Thin on plot coherence, heavy on goo, bathed in blue and red lighting, it will enthrall all who relish top-tier rubbery, damp practical gore effects.

The film looks back at the strange social ritual enacted whenever strangers enter into the cinema together. We wish to at once be of a crowd and simultaneously to leave our selves and our neighbors in the darkness of the theater, immersed in the bright play of light up on the screen. Bava’s Demons wrenches our eyes from the screen back down to the throbbing viscera of the sweaty bodies in the seats below, bursting in foul gushes of putrid fluids. How could we resist consuming/being consumed by these images in our little microcinema with all of you?

This week we’re screening on Tuesday rather than Wednesday in observance of International Workers Day. We encourage you to go check out any actions in solidarity with the people of Palestine happening around Portland on May 1.
