A nostalgic and restless teenage greaser, Rusty James (Matt Dillon) eagerly awaits the return of his idealized older brother, Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke), to Tulsa.
Coppola filmed RUMBLE FISH immediately after finishing the naturalistic, crowd-pleaser greaser drama, THE OUTSIDERS (1983). This atmospheric, shadowy follow-up departs sharply from its greaser flick predecessors. With stylized sets and a fog machine on max overdrive, Coppola expertly spacializes Rusty James’ angst into a smoky, jagged landscape of tormented longing. The outstanding cinematography is complemented by an angular, ticking score by Stewart Copeland and excellent cast, among which is a charming appearance by Tom Waits as a contemplative waiter musing on the nature of time. RUMBLE FISH rules.
